Host Activation Verification

When a new system is brought online, the host activation status is set to TRIAL and you have 30 days to activate the host. To activate the host, you must get an Activation Key (or "Site" Key) from CygNet Support and then apply that key to the host.

Note: CygNet hosts do not shut down automatically when they fall out of activation compliance. You will, however, receive warnings in various CygNet client applications (CygNet Explorer, CygNet Studio, CygNet Vision, and FMS Explorer) if a host is not activated. Best practice recommends using the Service Monitoring Service (SVCMON) to monitor status and set up notifications.

Various actions can cause a host activation state to change from ENABLED back to TRIAL. For example, a change in server hardware could result in the calculation of a new Activation Code. Since this new Activation Code would no longer match the original Activation Key, the state would change to TRIAL and the 30-day countdown would begin. Other events that can trigger this change include a sustained failure in the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service and load balancing from virtual machines to different physical hardware.

If a service cannot calculate an Activation Code, it cannot perform an activation check. In this case, its state would be set to CODE CALC ERROR.

Note: It is recommended that you monitor the Activation Status (see below) to watch for this situation.

While activation is generally thought of as a "host" event (thus the name Host Activation), in actuality every CygNet service performs activation checks. Each CygNet service calculates the Activation Code and verifies the code against the Activation Key at start-up and at regular intervals — every 20 minutes for the Remote Service Manager (RSM); every 2 hours for all other services. To prevent the operating system from being overloaded by information requests, each service’s check in is offset from other services.

When you are using a CygNet client, a yellow notification bar appears if a host activation issue exists for services with which the client has communicated. Click on the yellow bar to display a CygNet Activation/Licensing Issues dialog box to display more information about the activation issue.

Note: After a host has been activated, the yellow bar may persist until all services have verified the Activation Code against the Activation Key.

Monitoring Host Activation

It is recommended that you implement Service Monitoring (via the CygNet ServiceMon Administration Utility) to monitor the status of host activation for your system. You can use the following Info Items to monitor the host activation status:

We strongly recommend that you use one of these info items to monitor the status of activation, and that you configure alarms and notifications so that you are alerted if the status changes to any value other than what you expect.

SVMACTSTAT
Enum Values
SVMACTDESC
String Values
Description

0

UNKNOWN

Host activation is in an unknown state.

1

TRIAL: X (where x is number of days remaining)

The host is in trial mode. If using SVMACTDESC to monitor the status, the string includes the number of days remaining in the trial.

2

ENABLED

The host is activated.

3

DISABLED

The host has been deactivated by a CygNet administrator.

4

EXPIRED

The 30-day trial has expired and the host was not activated.

5

ERROR

The activation key was not created for the system.

6

CODE CALC ERROR

The host activation could not be verified due to a hardware or operating system issue.
